The Big Ram

It’s not a trip to Karoonda without meeting The Big Ram.

An iconic feature of the town’s main street and recognising the importance of the sheep industry in the district, The Big Ram has stood in position since 1997.

Standing 2 metres tall The Big Ram originated from a concept development by local resident Don Anderson and was facilitated by the Karoonda Development Group.

Basing his good looks on photographs of the 1996 Adelaide Show Champion ram, the sculpture was built under the guidance of Adelaide Artist Mr Andrew Stock together with community volunteer labour and assistance.

Tiles made by students at ‍ Karoonda Area School, East Murray Area School and local residents were placed around the base of the structure in 2001.

He adds an impressive presence on the Railway Lawns and is loved by visitors of all ages.
